I have similar problems, for example when my TeXmacs document
contains special characters : you cannot input them in the
status line where you type the string you want to search.

For example, I have the text "a [+] b" in the document. I want to
replace this with (in LaTeX notation) "$a [+] b$". Yes, I _just_
want to put this in math mode. Couldn't find a way didn't involve
retyping the string "a [+] b".

This can be done. More commands of this kind would perhaps be
useful, then (i.e., for inserting upper nodes above the current
selection).
